In brief

As millions of displaced Syrians express hope to return home after the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad, many find their properties in ruins or completely destroyed, reflecting the catastrophic impact of a decade-long conflict.

Lubna Labaad stood amidst the remnants of her former neighborhood, witnessing the desolation left by a years-long civil war. Once a vibrant community, Qaboun in Damascus now resembles a graveyard of memories, with the only surviving structure being a mosque adorned with a poignant plea for forgiveness. With the sudden end of the brutal conflict in December following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, many like Ms. Labaad are eager to return, but their journey is fraught with sorrow and hardship.“After all this time waiting, we are finally here,” she expressed, embodying the aspiration of countless displaced families wishing to reclaim their lives. Despite her home still standing, it is now stripped of basic essentials—pipes, sinks, and even electrical outlets—all looted by an occupying soldier over the years. The Labaads, however, consider themselves fortunate, as many returnees find only rubble where their beloved homes once stood. The United Nations has labeled Syria’s conflict one of the most significant displacement crises of our time, with over 13 million people forcibly uprooted from their homes. Among them are more than six million Syrians who fled to neighboring countries, while at least seven million remain displaced within Syria’s borders, navigating a landscape that continuously bears the scars of violence and despair. As Lubna and her husband, Da’aas, attempt to rebuild their lives, they are faced with difficult choices and the haunting memories of what once was. Their journey reflects a collective struggle: the dreams of millions to return, rebuild, and heal in a country forever changed by the past yet still alive with hope for a better future. As they begin to carve out a semblance of normalcy, their resilience shines amidst the ruins, standing as a testament to the human spirit's capacity to endure, even against overwhelming odds.
