In brief
The Guatemalan government has launched a significant investigation into the Lev Tahor community, following alarming reports of child exploitation and trafficking, leading to the rescue of numerous minors from a secluded compound.
In a significant operation, Guatemalan officials descended on a compound linked to the ultra-Orthodox sect Lev Tahor on Friday, resulting in the dismantling of a situation believed to involve serious human rights violations. Authorities report that they have rescued at least 160 children and teenagers, who are suspected victims of human trafficking and various forms of abuse. No arrests were made during the raid, but Dimas Jiménez y Jiménez, a regional prosecutor, revealed that charges being considered include human trafficking, forced pregnancy, and the mistreatment of minors. Notably, special prosecutor Nancy Lorena Paiz García highlighted that authorities discovered bodies buried on the property, inciting concerns regarding the potential deaths of minors associated with the community. The escalation of this case was prompted by the courageous escape of four non-Guatemalan minors in November, who alerted the authorities to the conditions within the community. The subsequent investigation established credible evidence that these minors were victims of human trafficking, as confirmed by medical examinations and the testimonies of those involved. The operation was quite extensive, involving nearly 480 law enforcement officials, including police, military personnel, and psychological experts, who collaborated to secure the compound and safeguard the minors. Authorities also seized devices, targeting evidence related to child pornography, and employed search dogs to investigate potential human remains buried in the vicinity. This raid reflects ongoing concerns about the reclusive Lev Tahor community, comprised of roughly 500 inhabitants residing within a secluded farm bordered by formidable walls and a locked gate, situated in the Santa Rosa department of Guatemala, near the Mexican border. The revelations continue to raise alarm bells about the treatment of children within such isolated religious communities.
