In brief
Israeli naval vessels have targeted the Houthi-controlled port city of Hudaydah following recent missile launches from the Houthis aimed at Israel. Despite the military operation, Houthi representatives downplayed the impact, asserting continued support for Gaza, while experts express concern over potential humanitarian repercussions in Yemen.
Israeli naval vessels have executed strikes against targets in the port city of Hudaydah, a vital location under the control of the Houthi movement in Yemen. The Israeli military justified the strikes, asserting they were a response to missile attacks launched by the Houthis aimed at Israel, with the intention to neutralize the port’s military utilities. Local reports have emerged indicating no immediate casualties from the strikes, which resulted in plumes of smoke visibly rising from the area. Houthi media outlet al-Masirah has confirmed that two separate strikes were executed. The Houthis, a group that has shown solidarity with Gaza, have frequently fired missiles towards Israeli territories in recent weeks, including a missile intercepted over Jerusalem that targeted an Israeli airport. The strikes on Hudaydah, notable for being executed by naval forces rather than aircraft, took place in the early hours of Tuesday. Prior to the strikes, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued evacuation alerts for individuals present at Hudaydah and other Houthi-operated ports, urging those in the vicinity to leave for their safety. Houthi spokesperson Nasruddin Amer later stated that the strike's impact was minimal, claiming it did not affect the group’s morale or operational capabilities, while highlighting ongoing public demonstrations in support of Gaza. Importantly, Hudaydah port serves as the primary gateway for food and essential humanitarian aid for millions of Yemenis, and it has previously faced multiple attacks from Israel, resulting in both casualties and temporary disruptions to its operations. The Houthis have held significant power in north-western Yemen since 2014, following their ousting of the recognized government in Sanaa, which has led to an enduring civil conflict. Their recent missile and drone assaults on commercial vessels in the Red Sea began as an act of solidarity with Palestinians amidst Israel's military actions in Gaza, igniting a series of retaliatory measures from Israel and international entities, including a renewed airstrike campaign by the US.Recent actions have escalated tensions in the region, disrupting major shipping routes through the Red Sea, which are crucial for global trade. Following these developments, even prominent shipping companies have reconsidered their operations, opting for longer routes around southern Africa to avoid potential conflict zones.
