In brief

Residents of New Delhi are facing serious health threats due to a plant that converts waste into electricity. Investigations reveal acute emissions affecting community well-being, challenging the city's green energy facade.

In the bustling streets of New Delhi, a contentious debate is brewing around an industrial plant that transforms the sprawling city's garbage into electricity. What was intended as a progressive step towards greener energy has raised concerns among local residents, who attribute their deteriorating health to toxic emissions.Years of investigation have revealed startling findings. Our team utilized advanced air sampling technology, adjusting rooftop locations to catch the billowing smoke from the plant. Following the trucks that transported ash across residential neighborhoods, we combed through the discarded refuse to gather samples laden with pollutants. The stinging fumes triggered painful migraines, masked only by our N-95 face coverings. It became clear that chronic pollution was a pervasive issue affecting the daily lives of New Delhi citizens. My immersion into this narrative began in 2019 when my partner, photojournalist Bryan Denton, and I sought to expose the ramifications of pollution on public health. As we collected testimonials, we stumbled upon alarming stories from families living in nearby affluent areas, where nebulizers became indispensable. Medical professionals cited rising miscarriages and alarming spikes in respiratory conditions, alarming indicators of the facility's destructive impact.Dr. Shailendra Bhadoriya, a physician in the community, noted the surge in asthma diagnoses correlating with the plant's operational history. The prospect of a greener future now comes with the chilling reminder of what sacrifices it demands from those living nearby. While New Delhi positions itself as a model of sustainable urban planning, the dissonance between clean energy aspirations and the realities faced by its residents raises troubling questions. As we traverse the city, staying vigilant about the pathways of contamination, our quest continues: seeking accountability for a system threatened by its own progress. The urgency to confront these hazardous realities is paramount if a truly sustainable future is to be preserved for all its citizens.
