A South Carolina mother has initiated legal action against toy giant Mattel after a distressing incident involving packaging mislabeling on a recently launched doll. The doll, tied to the highly anticipated film adaptation of "Wicked," which features performances by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, hit the shelves last month.

The legal complaint arises from a significant error made by Mattel, who printed the address of an explicit adult website on the doll’s packaging. According to Holly Ricketson, the mother in this case, she purchased the doll for her young daughter, who inadvertently accessed the named site. The lawsuit states that the daughter quickly revealed the shocking contents of the site, showcasing “hardcore, full-on nude pornographic images,” leaving both mother and daughter horrified.

Ricketson’s lawsuit describes the printing of the website as an "unforgivable mistake" and declares the dolls incapable of serving their intended purpose. It emphasizes that Mattel has yet to provide any form of compensation for affected consumers despite this grievous misprint.

Ricketson contends that had she been aware of the potential for such content, she would never have made the purchase. This class action lawsuit is seeking an impressive $5 million in damages, aimed at compensating anyone in the United States who acquired the dolls with the erroneous packaging.

In response to the backlash, Mattel has expressed deep regret over the mishap, urging consumers to discard the defective packaging. The lawsuit additionally raises charges against the company, including negligence, issues of selling unsuitable products, and infractions of California’s consumer protection laws.

The film "Wicked," originating from a book that dives into the background of the Wicked Witch of the West, has enjoyed considerable success since its Broadway inception in 2003 and the recent film adaptation released on November 22. With a box office gross of over $263 million in the United States alone, it is evident that this version of "Wicked" is resonating with audiences, despite the controversy surrounding the doll packaging.

Mattel continues to face scrutiny as it navigates this legal challenge and the implications for consumer safety and corporate responsibility.
