In brief
Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Durk has been arrested in Florida on a murder-for-hire charge, following new developments connected to ongoing violence within the Chicago drill rap community.
US rapper Lil Durk, known for his impactful contributions to hip-hop and a recent Grammy victory, has been arrested on a charge of murder-for-hire. According to reports by CBS News and other media outlets, the star—born Durk Devontay Banks—was taken into custody in Broward County, Florida, on Thursday night. He is currently being held without bail. The timing of his arrest raises eyebrows, occurring just a day after five members associated with his hip-hop outfit, Only The Family (OTF), were charged in connection to a 2022 shooting that resulted in the death of the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo. Lil Durk has had a meteoric rise since 2019, boasting six albums within the top five of the US Billboard charts and collaborating with music giants such as Drake and J Cole.Lil Durk, who hails from Chicago, has secured four Grammy Award nominations and won for Best Melodic Rap Performance in February for his track “All My Life,” featuring J Cole. He founded OTF in 2010, and the group is central to Chicago’s drill rap scene, which has been marred by violence. Reports indicate that the five individuals charged recently orchestrated the 2022 shooting as retaliation for the death of rapper King Von in 2020, who was signed to OTF.Further complicating the narrative, an unnamed conspirator allegedly incentivized participation in the murder of Quando Rondo by promising financial rewards and music opportunities within OTF. The violence escalated in 2022 when shots were fired at a car carrying Rondo and his family, which tragically resulted in the death of his cousin, Saviay'a Robinson, although Rondo and his sister were not injured. In the broader context of hip-hop-related violence, Lil Durk had previously faced charges, including attempted murder, that were dropped following a shooting incident in Atlanta in 2019. The recent developments surrounding his arrest align with increasing scrutiny of gang violence within the music industry, and the case continues to unfold. As of now, Lil Durk's representatives have not provided a comment.
