In brief

Authorities highlight ongoing challenges in addressing international terrorism linked to separatist movements.

The FBI announced on Thursday the arrest of Harpreet Singh, a man wanted in India for his involvement in terrorist activities related to a grenade attack on a retired police officer. Singh, who reportedly entered the United States illegally, had been skillfully avoiding capture through the use of disposable phones and encrypted communications. His arrest occurred in Sacramento and marks a significant stride in ongoing international counter-terrorism efforts. According to Indian authorities, Singh has connections to Babbar Khalsa International, a terrorist organization linked to the Sikh separatist movement, and appears to have collaborated with Pakistan’s intelligence agency. In September, he allegedly provided logistical support, funds, and munitions to operatives in India who carried out the attack in Chandigarh. Prior to Singh’s capture, India had issued a cash reward for information leading to his arrest and had been actively pursuing several other Indian nationals believed to be residing in the U.S. These individuals are accused of engaging in plots orchestrated by separatist factions, with at least ten warrants issued against them. One notable case includes Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who authorities say was involved in a plot to assassinate individuals in New York linked to these separatist agendas. With terrorism concerns escalating, this case underscores the challenges faced by both U.S. and Indian agencies in combating threats linked to international extremist movements.
