In brief
The incident, involving a snapped cable, raises safety concerns and highlights the perils of popular tourist attractions.
In a heartbreaking incident, Italian authorities confirmed on Friday that four individuals lost their lives in a cable car accident that occurred on Thursday in the popular tourist area south of Naples. The victims included two British tourists, Elaine Margaret Winn and Graeme Derek Winn, along with an Israeli woman, Janan Suleiman, who held Israeli citizenship. A fourth casualty was identified as the Italian driver of the cable car.The accident transpired mere moments before the cable car was set to arrive at its destination on the picturesque plateau of Monte Faito, famous for its panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Local officials, including Castellammare di Stabia's mayor, Luigi Vicinanza, described the situation as "tragic," emphasizing the emotional toll on the families of those involved. The only survivor, Thabet Suleiman, brother to Janan Suleiman, is currently receiving treatment for critical injuries in a Naples hospital. According to reports from the mayor, the cable car plummeted after a traction cable snapped, which also impeded another cable car servicing the area. This resulted in a rescue operation involving nine passengers trapped in the lower car, who were assisted by firefighters leveraging harnesses to bring them to safety. In the wake of the disaster, Italian prosecutors have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the cable break and evaluate safety protocols at the facility. Family members of the Israeli victims are expected to arrive in Italy, further indicating the profound impact of this tragic occurrence on international communities and raising questions about the safety standards at popular tourist destinations.
