In brief

In the wake of escalating tensions in Gaza, Israel has rapidly advanced its military capabilities, utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance warfare strategies. The recent use of AI tools, designed to identify and target individuals, has borne witness to both effectiveness and tragic civilian loss.

In late 2023, amid ongoing hostilities, Israeli forces aimed to eliminate Ibrahim Biari, a prominent Hamas commander believed to be hiding in Gaza’s labyrinthine tunnels. Unable to locate him through traditional intelligence avenues, Israeli commanders opted for a new military tool featuring state-of-the-art artificial intelligence, developed within Israel’s prestigious Unit 8200, the equivalent of the U.S. National Security Agency. This AI technology, previously untested in combat, allowed Israeli forces to monitor Biari’s communications, ultimately leading to a targeted airstrike on October 31, 2023. The operation successfully killed Biari; however, it also tragically resulted in the deaths of over 125 civilians, as reported by conflict monitor, Airwars. This incident exemplifies Israel's unprecedented acceleration in tools incorporating AI for military purposes amid the conflict, as learned from numerous anonymous defense officials. The past 18 months have seen a surge in employing AI algorithms for various tasks—integrating facial recognition algorithms to identify targeted individuals, generating potential airstrike lists, and creating an Arabic-language AI model for monitoring social media and communications. These advancements reflect a significant shift in combat strategy, raising pressing ethical concerns regarding civilian safety and the implications of AI in modern warfare. As the demand for rapid military enhancements continues in this ongoing conflict, the potential repercussions extend far beyond the battlefield.
