In brief
The acclaimed Instagram squirrel, Peanut, has been taken by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation amidst safety concerns, sparking a public campaign for his return.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Peanut, the Instagram-famous squirrel boasting over 500,000 followers, has been seized by authorities in New York. The little rodent's caregiver, Mark Longo, is desperately appealing for his return after the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) conducted a raid at his residence based on complaints regarding Peanut's living conditions. Longo expressed his bewilderment and frustration on social media, calling out those who reported him as deserving "a special place in hell" for their actions. As public interest mounts, a petition advocating for Peanut's release has garnered over 20,000 signatures, reflecting widespread support for the cherished pet. In response to the seizure, Longo has begun raising funds to cover his legal expenses in the battle against the DEC. On their part, the DEC confirmed they commenced an investigation following multiple reports regarding Peanut's conditions and concerns about the keeping of wild animals as personal pets. The current state of Peanut, along with whether he has been euthanized or not, remains unclear. Longo discovered Peanut seven years ago, rescuing him after the young squirrel's mother was fatally injured. Although he nursed Peanut back to health with hopes of releasing him into the wild, the squirrel returned to Longo’s porch the next day, suffering an injury to his tail. Since then, Peanut has become an internet sensation, delighting followers with videos of him engaging in playful antics, dressed in adorable outfits, and enjoying his favorite foods like waffles. In addition to the squirrel, DEC also seized a raccoon named Fred, which Longo had recently adopted. This unfolding story sheds light on the complexities of wildlife rehabilitation and pet ownership, all while highlighting the impact of social media on animal companionship in today’s world.
