In brief

Following confessions by key accomplices, justice has been served as five people implicated in the staged crime scene of Canserbero’s murder have received lengthy prison sentences.

Five individuals have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in the cover-up of the murder of Venezuelan rapper Canserbero, a case that has shocked the music community since it unfolded in 2015. The group included a forensic expert, three police officers, and a music impresario, who were sentenced to terms ranging from 15 to 20 years on Tuesday for their part in staging the crime scene to mislead authorities.Canserbero, known for his impactful contributions to Spanish-language rap and recognized by Rolling Stone magazine, was murdered by his manager, Natalia Améstica, who drugged and fatally stabbed him. Along with her brother Guillermo, they disposed of his body by throwing it from a 10th-floor window, initially creating a narrative of suicide to cover up the heinous act.Initially, it was reported that the 26-year-old star had engaged in a knife fight with his friend, Carlos Molnar, before taking his own life. However, a breakthrough confession from Améstica in December 2023 revealed the disturbing details surrounding that fateful night. In a video statement, she admitted to drugging both men with a potent tranquilizer and then attacking them when her boyfriend, Molnar, entered the kitchen. After killing Molnar and fatally injuring Canserbero, she called her brother for help, and they enlisted the assistance of three intelligence officers from Sebin to alter the scene, creating the false impression of a murder-suicide. These officers manipulated evidence, and in one instance, attempted to bribe a forensic expert investigating the case for $10,000 to ensure the cover-up succeeded.Furthermore, Marcos Pratolongo, a music impresario with ties to Canserbero, was sentenced for his complicity in the crime, possessing keys to Canserbero's apartment where crucial evidence vanished. The Venezuelan attorney general’s office disclosed that Pratolongo played a significant role in the conspiracy, although specific details about his actions remain undisclosed. The convictions of these five individuals, who aided the Améstica siblings in deceiving law enforcement, mark a pivotal moment in the ongoing pursuit of justice in the Canserbero murder case, ensuring accountability for those who sought to conceal a tragic crime.
