Faith leaders ministering to Christian communities in Venezuela and among the Venezuelan diaspora in the United States are advocating for prayers for peace as they navigate the emotional landscape following the ouster of Nicolás Maduro.
In Venezuela, the reactions from the Catholic bishops’ conference and the Evangelical Council have been measured, urging calm and patience. Conversely, many pastors and community members in the diaspora are welcoming the news as a chance for political renewal. Archbishop Thomas Wenski in Miami, serving a sizeable Venezuelan community, noted the collective anxiety regarding future developments in Venezuela, yet feels the church can facilitate a positive transition.
Since 2014, nearly 8 million individuals have fled Venezuela in search of safety and opportunities, many settling in South Florida. Celebrations erupted among Venezuelans in Doral, Miami, as news broke about Maduro's capture in a U.S. military operation.
Despite feelings of jubilance, many are feeling apprehensive due to the recent termination of federal programs allowed under the Trump administration, potentially jeopardizing the stay of over 700,000 Venezuelans in the U.S.
Wenski expressed the importance of continued advocacy from the church while urging patience and reconciliation within the divided nation. He underscored that the church is one of the few independent institutions remaining in Venezuela that can offer hope and speak against injustices.
In a display of unity, the community gathered for services and vigils, with prayers focusing on peace in their homeland and prompted by local leaders to seek reconciliation between factions.
Emotional gatherings took place across the United States, with community members bringing their flags and hopes for a tranquil future. Many participants expressed complex emotions about the intervention yet recognized the necessity to address Maduro's legacy of human rights violations.
The community's faith remains strong, as they collectively seek a peaceful resolution throughout their ongoing struggles. The hopes for a better future are underscored by the firm belief that they will rise above the challenges faced.
