Several people were injured when a vehicle struck revelers at a parade celebrating the Lao New Year on Saturday in rural Louisiana, authorities said.
The driver was quickly arrested and charged with impaired driving, police said.
Video shared on social media showed multiple people on the ground at the annual event in Broussard and New Iberia, with firefighters attending to those affected.
Approximately 15 individuals sustained injuries, some of which were serious, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“Based on the preliminary investigation, this does not appear to be an intentional act,” stated Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Rebecca Melancon.
The Louisiana State Police noted that the 57-year-old driver, who resides in Jeanerette, appeared impaired at the time of arrest and later tested positive for a high blood alcohol level. He faces charges of impaired, negligent, and careless driving and possession of an open alcohol container.
The incident occurred around 2:30 PM, prompting an immediate response from Acadian Ambulance, which deployed 10 ambulances and a medical helicopter to assist the injured.
The parade was a key part of a three-day Lao New Year celebration located in Lanxang Village, a Laotian neighborhood known for its rich cultural festivities, including traditional food, music, and family-friendly activities.
Governor Jeff Landry expressed his sorrow regarding the situation: “Sharon and I are praying for all those affected, and are grateful for the first responders who have responded to the scene.”
The festival's organizers shared their sadness over the incident and offered prayers for the victims and their families during this challenging time. Although afternoon and evening activities were canceled, religious services were still planned for Sunday as the festival continues to honor its traditions.
