Former National Football League (NFL) running back Doug Martin has died aged 36 while in police custody in California.

The Oakland Police Department reported that Martin, who spent most of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died after a confrontation during an alleged home break-in on Saturday.

A struggle ensued while officers attempted to detain him, leading to Martin becoming unresponsive before being transported to a hospital where he later died.

His family confirmed the tragedy, sharing that the cause of death is currently unconfirmed and requesting privacy during this difficult time.

In a statement, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers expressed their heartfelt condolences over the sudden loss of Martin, highlighting the impact he made during his time with the team, including a record-setting rookie performance in 2012 where he rushed for 1,454 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

Martin, nicknamed the Muscle Hamster for his remarkable strength at 5ft 9in (1.75m), was drafted by the Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. Despite his success, he faced challenges during his career, including injuries and a suspension in 2016 for violating the NFL's drug policy.

After spending six of his seven NFL seasons with the Buccaneers, Martin concluded his professional career with the Oakland Raiders in 2018. His passing has sparked discussions about the circumstances that led to his untimely death in police custody.
