China has announced the largest recall in its history, affecting more than four million vehicles—including nearly three million Teslas—due to hidden door handles that pose serious safety risks.
The recall comes before new regulations that require every car to have a mechanical release on both the inside and outside of its doors, ensuring that passengers can exit even when power is lost.
Hidden handles, which became popular with Elon Musk’s electric vehicles, blend into the interior trim and require passengers to locate a small button to open the door. If the button fails or power is cut, occupants may be trapped, delaying rescue efforts after a crash.
Industry analysts note that while the design offers a sleek, wind‑drag‑reduced look, it can be confusing and dangerous. The issue has been cited in fatal accidents involving other brands, such as Xiaomi’s SU7, where reported electrical failures prevented emergency exit.
In response to the recall, Chinese authorities have ordered manufacturers to add warning labels inside doors and, in some cases, provide software that lowers windows if a crash triggers loss of power. Tesla and other automakers will also receive updates to hard‑link emergency door release mechanisms.
In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reviewing potential requirements for emergency door‑exit systems, while the European Union is drafting standards to ensure concealed handles remain functional if a vehicle’s electrical system fails.
Safety experts argue that mechanical, non‑electronic solutions are essential for reliable escape, especially in high‑speed collisions or fires. Engineers expressed concern that the new measures—warning labels and software updates—represented only a weak remedy compared to installing physical release points.
It remains unclear if similar recalls will be issued outside China, but the regulatory change could set a global precedent as EVs continue to dominate the market.
