In brief

Valerie, a miniature dachshund, vanished from her pen on Kangaroo Island and spent 529 days evading capture. Now secured by rescuers, she is undergoing rehabilitation before reuniting with her family.

Valerie, a miniature dachshund, became an unlikely survivalist after slipping out of her pen and disappearing into the rugged terrain of Kangaroo Island, South Australia, in November 2023. For the next 529 days, local residents and wildlife rescuers searched relentlessly for her, often sighting her on surveillance cameras or hearing reports of her roaming the wilderness. After over a year of elusive sightings, Valerie was finally recaptured last week, much to the relief of her homeowners, Josh Fishlock and Georgia Gardner, who had been visiting the island when she disappeared. “It was a long tough battle,” remarked Jared Karran from Kangala Wildlife Rescue, a group that played a crucial role in her recovery. Valerie was last seen wearing a distinctive pink collar, which helped locals recognize her. Despite initially being portrayed as “not very outdoorsy,” rescuers believe she managed to survive through natural resources available in the bush, such as drinking from natural water sources and scavenging for food. While she is safe now, Valerie is undergoing a re-acclimatization process to adjust back to home life before a highly anticipated reunion with her owners. This rescue story has captured the hearts of many, underscoring the resilience of animals faced with adversity in nature, as well as the enduring bond between pets and their families.
