Recycling Hero: Italian Waste Workers Recover €1 Million Lottery Ticket
A €1 million lottery ticket, mistakenly tossed into a shop bin by a player who thought it was non‑payable, was found after a two‑day search by waste workers in Bitonto, southern Italy. The ticket had become part of a “mountain of waste” that a bin lorry had collected.
Sandro Toscano, head of the Sanb refuse company, told Italian news agency Ansa: "This story is nothing short of miraculous," when he laughed about the mix‑up. The “non‑payable” message appears when an amount exceeds the shop’s capacity to pay out.
After the winner’s family noticed his favourite numbers—2, 4, 8, 10, 51—had been drawn, the family went back to the shop. There, the waste workers realized the tickets were discarded and retrieved the winning slip from a compromised bag among other damaged tickets.
The recovery operation cost will be charged to the winner, who had signed a declaration promising to cover the search expenses. Toscano joked that, after retrieving the ticket, a colleague brought a scratch card and they won €50.
This incident demonstrates the crucial role of thoughtful waste management: proper sorting and diligent collection prevent valuable items from burying in landfill and reduce the environmental impact of unnecessary waste. It serves as a reminder to consider the hidden value in our discarded materials and to support robust recycling systems that can uncover treasures—and mitigate emissions—from otherwise overlooked waste piles.
