In brief
Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov was arrested for illegally approaching the North Sentinel island, known for its hostile indigenous population and strict protection laws.
In a troubling incident raising concerns about indigenous rights and safety, 24-year-old Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, an American YouTuber, was apprehended after attempting to interact with the Sentinelese tribe on North Sentinel Island, located in the Indian Ocean. The island is part of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands and is protected by strict laws that prohibit outsiders from making contact with its inhabitants, who maintain a traditional lifestyle and are known for their hostility to intruders.Polyakov reportedly set sail alone in an inflatable boat on March 29, hoping to film his encounter with the inhabitants. Equipped with a GoPro camera, he navigated to the island using GPS technology. Upon landing, he left a bottle of Diet Coke and a coconut as offerings, along with taking sand samples and capturing video footage of his visit. According to police reports, he did not detect any tribe members during his visit. The authorities arrested him on March 31 when he returned to Port Blair, the archipelago's capital, emphasizing the importance of adhering to regulations that safeguard the tribe and its way of life. The government has previously made headlines for vigorously enforcing these laws after past encounters resulting in violence, such as the death of missionary John Allen Chau in 2018, who was killed by tribesmen when he attempted to contact them.India’s laws regarding North Sentinel Island are clear: no contact is permitted to preserve the fragile existence of the Sentinelese. These well-established legal protections aim to respect the tribe's autonomy and shield them from potential diseases and other external influences that may arise from outside contact.
