Madonna honors William Orbit: A music legend remembered
Madonna publicly mourned the passing of music producer William Orbit, who died at 69 on 23 July. The pop icon celebrated their partnership on the Grammy‑winning album "Ray of Light" and other projects, noting the influence that Orbit had on her creative process.
"You pressed a magic button inside of me and I fell into a galaxy of unrealised dreams," the singer wrote on Instagram. "Your music gave me a magic carpet to fly on and I visited many places." These words echoed the sentiment that Orbit’s production style was an almost otherworldly experience for artists.
From the electronic and ambient textures of "Ray of Light" in 1998 to the high‑energy pop of "Music" in 2000 and the experimental tracks of 2012’s "MDNA", Orbit helped shape Madonna’s sound across three decades. The album earned three Grammys and remains a high point of her career.
Madonna’s tribute included a video of herself standing beside Orbit while accepting a Grammy, along with clips of music videos and studio moments that underscored their collaboration. She reflected: "I had an epiphany when I met you and started working with you," adding that the creative process was "silently waiting for ideas to explode out of your keyboard or guitar."
"I miss those days," she added.
Beyond work with Madonna, Orbit produced for Blur, Pink, and the girl group All Saints, showcasing versatility across pop and rock genres.
Madonna concluded her tribute by saying, "You were so otherworldly. So singular," and that even though she had worked with other producers she never forgot the “magical time we spent together.” She added, "I was so lucky to have known you and fallen down the rabbit hole with you."
