In brief
Salehi, who was arrested after the death of Mahsa Amini, faced multiple charges for opposing the government and has gained support from global advocacy groups.
Toomaj Salehi, a 34-year-old Iranian rapper, has been released from prison after serving two years following the overturning of his controversial death sentence. Salehi was initially arrested in October 2022 for his vocal support of widespread protests ignited by the tragic death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody. His remarks and music had openly criticized Iran's ruling authorities, which led to a series of severe legal repercussions. In June 2023, Iran's judiciary overturned his death sentence, and he was subsequently sentenced to serve one year in prison for charges related to propaganda against the state. His release was confirmed by the state-run Mizan news agency on Sunday, marking a significant moment in a case that has drawn international attention. Before his arrest, Salehi had already faced severe restrictions in his music career, including performance bans. In July 2023, he received a six-year and three-month prison term after dodging a death penalty thanks to a Supreme Court decision. He briefly enjoyed freedom on bail but was soon rearrested for allegedly disseminating unverified claims, particularly a video in which he spoke of being "tortured" by Iranian intelligence agents.Salehi was ultimately sentenced to death in April 2024 under the charge of "corruption on earth," which was later rescinded. His list of charges included spreading falsehoods online, inciting public unrest, and propaganda against the Iranian government.Campaign organizations, such as Index on Censorship, have championed Salehi’s release, declaring that he should never have faced imprisonment. His plight has become representative of the widespread dissent within Iran, particularly in the wake of the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman whose arrest by the morality police triggered nationwide anger. These protests resulted in hundreds losing their lives and thousands being arrested, highlighting the intense struggle for justice and reform in Iran.
