In brief

As the war in Gaza continues, families like that of Zuhair Abu Odeh struggle to find safety while caring for loved ones with disabilities. Many disabled individuals are left without essential mobility aids, forced to navigate dangerous conditions, highlighting a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by military actions.

The chaos of war has taken a severe toll on people with disabilities and their families in Gaza. As home displacement escalates due to ongoing conflict, the situation has become increasingly dire for many. The story of Zuhair Abu Odeh is emblematic of the intense struggles faced by these individuals. Forced to evacuate northern Gaza, Abu Odeh carried his 9-year-old daughter Lara, who uses a wheelchair, for hours on foot after their wheelchair became stuck in a road crack. The family migrated nine miles to the south, seeking shelter and safety. "We’re living through impossible times," he stated as he described his harrowing journey. In a humanitarian crisis defined by scarcity, the experiences of people with disabilities have become especially harrowing. An estimated two million residents have faced displacement throughout Gaza, exacerbating their struggles to secure food, clean water, and reliable electricity. Those with disabilities—whether blind, deaf, or physically impaired—encounter additional hardships due to shortages in assistive devices and the destruction of accessible infrastructure. For many, the cruel realities of war are further intensified by the lack of basic resources needed for care and mobility. Just this past February, Abu Odeh managed to find Lara a new wheelchair, bringing a small semblance of relief. However, navigating the rough terrains of makeshift camps established for internally displaced persons continues to present immense challenges. These alarming circumstances expose the pressing need for humanitarian assistance targeted towards the most vulnerable populations within conflict zones, underscoring the importance of immediate aid and advocacy for the rights and needs of people with disabilities in Gaza.
