In brief

The reactivation of the SWIFT system marks a monumental step forward for Syria, post-civil war, towards reintegration in the international financial landscape.

Syria made a notable stride toward reintegration into the global banking community as it announced the completion of its first electronic transfer in 14 years with a Western bank on Thursday. This transaction, which occurred earlier in the week with a European bank, is viewed as a pivotal moment for the war-torn nation amidst ongoing tensions in the Middle East."This step represents gradual progress toward reintegrating the Syrian financial system into global financial channels," said Abdulkader Husrieh, governor of the Central Bank of Syria, in a recent statement confirming the transaction. The symbolic reactivation of the SWIFT system, the network facilitating electronic transfers between banks worldwide, indicates that Syria is making its first moves away from a prolonged isolation from the international financial framework.Historically, Syrian banks were severed from the international system due to sanctions imposed following the Assad regime’s crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in 2011, which eventually spiraled into a civil war lasting over a decade. Following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad in December, following the rebels' capture of the capital, Damascus, experts believe this transaction could signal the dawn of a new beginning for the country."This transaction marks the beginning of a new era for Syria," stated economic expert Jassem Ajaka, who emphasized the significance of the SWIFT order as a symbol of the nation's potential return to the international community and the lifting of economic sanctions. With this development, Syria may see the gradual rebuilding of its economy and a renewed relationship with other nations.
