Italian police have successfully captured Roberto Mazzarella, a mafia boss wanted for murder, at a luxury villa on the picturesque Amalfi Coast, concluding a year-long manhunt. The authorities revealed that Mazzarella, who had escaped during a planned arrest last January, was located in Vietri sul Mare.
Considered a significant figure in the Camorra organised crime syndicate based in Naples, Mazzarella is recognized as one of Italy's most dangerous fugitives, eliciting extensive efforts from law enforcement to apprehend him. At the time of his arrest, the 48-year-old was accompanied by his wife and two children, and he reportedly did not put up any resistance.
The Carabinieri military police took action to escort Mazzarella into custody, deploying patrol boats to secure the coastline. Armed officers were filmed entering the villa, where Mazzarella had been living under a false name. Alongside his arrest, police recovered three luxury watches, approximately €20,000 in cash, several false identification documents, and mobile phones, underlining the opulent lifestyle maintained by the fugitive.
The Mazzarella clan is infamously known for its operations in counterfeiting, particularly banknote forgery, within Naples. In addition to Mazzarella's capture, a recent operation resulted in the detention of 16 individuals linked to the clan on charges of cyber fraud.
