In brief
In a significant turn of events, authorities in Greece have implemented a series of emergency measures on the popular Aegean island of Santorini following a spate of over 200 earthquakes within just two days. The tremors have raised alarm among residents and prompted school closures, while emergency teams remain on standby across affected regions.
The earthquakes, which have been occurring in the vicinity of Santorini and Amorgos, were most intense on Sunday, with the government’s civil protection ministry reporting continuous shaking, sometimes occurring every few minutes. Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos reported on Facebook that the increasing strength of the quakes signified a worrying “intense pre-seismic sequence.” The largest tremors recorded reached magnitudes of 4.7 and 4.9, though most were minor.Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged calm while attending an EU meeting in Brussels, instructing islanders to adhere to safety protocols. Fortunately, despite the frequency and some intensity of the quakes, there have been no injuries reported, with only minor property damage and landslides observed. Greece, situated on numerous fault lines, frequently experiences seismic activity, but sequences like this, marked by increasing magnitudes, are relatively rare, heightening the concern among locals and officials alike.
