MIAMI (Echosphere News) — Eileen Higgins' victory in the Miami mayoral race marks a transformative moment in local governance, as she becomes the city’s first female mayor and the first Democrat in nearly three decades. Her notable win over Donald Trump’s endorsed candidate, Emilio Gonzalez, reflecting a broader shift in voter sentiment.
Higgins plans to review legal avenues to unwind an agreement allowing local police to engage in immigration enforcement, emphasizing her commitment to community-focused policing. We need to ensure our city police work for our neighborhoods and not on checking residents’ papers,” she stated during a press conference held after her election.
In her acceptance remarks, Higgins addressed concerns regarding the rising cost of living, highlighting that residents are grappling with inflated rents and rising costs due to tariffs. When I hear what the residents have to say about affordability, it’s real, she stressed, calling for national leadership to address this crisis effectively.
Reflecting on voter sentiment, Higgins noted a significant shift from frustration to fear among constituents, particularly as harsh immigration policies affect families and local healthcare sectors. We want a strong border and a path to citizenship, but not at the cost of tearing families apart and harming our economy, she insisted.
As Higgins steps into her new role, she may also face challenges regarding the potential establishment of Donald Trump’s presidential library in Miami, a project receiving mixed reactions from the community. We gave away valuable land to a billionaire for free, and that doesn’t make any sense to me, Higgins remarked, indicating her opposition to the proposal.
Next year, Miami is set to host the G20 summit, an event previously planned with Trump's involvement, adding to the complexity of Higgins' new position. In a direct response to queries about her relationship with Trump, she expressed confidence: No tengo ningún miedo de él, translating to I am not scared of him, at all. As she takes office, Higgins stands at the threshold of a new chapter for Miami, focusing on community needs and sustainable governance.
