In a troubling development, an immigration judge has denied the asylum application of the Conejo Ramos family, leading to their potential deportation to Ecuador. This ruling comes after attention was drawn to five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, who was photographed wearing a bunny hat and carrying a Spider-Man backpack as he was detained alongside his father during a controversial immigration crackdown in Minneapolis earlier this year.

Liam and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, were apprehended in a Minneapolis suburb on January 20, 2023, and spent ten days in a Texas detention facility before being released following a judicial order. Family lawyers have expressed their strong disappointment in the judge's decision, citing it as misguided and voicing their commitment to fighting the appeal vigorously.

We're just gravely disappointed in the judge's misguided decision, said Danielle Molliver, a lawyer for the family. She indicated that while it might take time for the appeal to progress through the courts, she anticipates a government effort to expedite the process. At minimum, I would hope we have a couple of months, she added.

During their time in detention, both Liam and Adrian were reportedly shaken, and although Liam has returned to school, concerns remain about their emotional well-being. The immigration raid that resulted in their detainment sparked significant protests and highlighted tensions in the community regarding federal immigration policies, especially in light of recent tragedies involving federal officers.

Local advocates accused immigration officers of using Liam as bait to lure his mother outside, a claim that federal authorities have disputed, labeling it an abject lie. As the family faces uncertainty, their situation reflects broader issues surrounding immigration enforcement practices and the human cost of current policies. The government asserts that Adrian Conejo Arias entered the U.S. illegally in December 2024, while the family maintains he sought asylum legally.
