In brief
Chris Brown, the American R&B star, avoided jail when he was handed a suspended eight‑month prison term for striking a club patron with a glass tequila bottle in 2023. The court found the attack extremely dangerous and affray, but a guilty plea and low risk of reoffending led to the suspended sentence. Brown and his associate, Rapper Omololu Akinlolu, were ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs. The incident was captured on CCTV, showing the brief 20‑second assault that left the victim with head and knee injuries.
London, October 26, 2026 – The American R&B star has avoided jail after pleading guilty to affray in an incident that occurred at the private club Tape in Mayfair on the night of 19 February 2023.
The court found Brown’s use of a glass tequila bottle to hit the victim, Abraham "Abe" Diaw, twice over the head plainly dangerous, describing the violence as intense. Akinlolu, Brown’s vocal coach, received a four‑month suspended sentence for his participation.
Both men were fined £1,500 in court costs. The eight‑month sentence will remain suspended for 12 months, meaning Brown will only serve time if he commits another offence during that period.
In the courtroom, the judge noted that the attack happened in a packed, small nightclub and that the risk to other patrons was significant. He emphasised that fame does not entitle anyone to special treatment under the law.
CCTV footage, shown to the court, showed the assault lasting no more than 20 seconds. Brown struck Diaw four times with the tequila bottle, two times to the head and a third blow to the shoulder. Akinlolu followed by punching the victim.
Diaw was taken to St Mary’s Hospital where he was treated for a head injury and a superficial knee injury. An MRI later revealed a high‑grade injury to a ligament in the left knee.
Despite the serious nature of the assault, the judge considered Brown’s guilty plea and the likelihood of future offending to be low. He told the singer that the judgment applied equally to everyone and highlighted the impact a custodial sentence would have on the singer’s four children.
Following sentencing, Brown was seen signing autographs for fans and posting a video from his car on Instagram, where he gave a thumbs‑up to his audience. The incident underscores the importance of safety protocols in nightlife venues and the legal consequences of violent behaviour.
