NEW YORK – An immigration enforcement sweep targeting vendors on New York City’s bustling Canal Street turned chaotic on Tuesday as crowds gathered to protest against federal agents, attempting to obstruct their operations aimed at sellers of counterfeit goods.
The scene became tense along the commercial thoroughfare, known for its vibrant market filled with knock-off designer handbags, electronics, and various goods. A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security reported that federal agents faced violent opposition while attempting to perform their duties, which included the blocking of vehicles and assaults on law enforcement.
During the confrontation, federal agents were observed detaining a street vendor selling decorative smartphone cases. As more protesters joined the scene, chants of “ICE out of New York” echoed through the street. The situation escalated with agents using pepper spray and force to clear the area.
Amid the unrest, several federal agents retreated while being taunted by protesters, with some federal units arriving in military-style vehicles to enforce the law further.
Mayor Eric Adams issued a statement distancing the city from the federal operation, asserting that the focus should be on violent crime rather than on undocumented individuals chasing their American dreams. “Our administration has been clear that undocumented New Yorkers trying to pursue their American Dreams should not be the target of law enforcement,” he stated.
The sweep, which led to multiple arrests, came shortly after a conservative social media influencer shared a video from the area, calling for accountability from Ice officials to investigate the street vendors.
