SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Rep. Eric Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign found itself in peril on Friday as major supporters and key citizens withdrew their endorsements following serious allegations of sexual assault against him. Swalwell faced accusations from a former staff member who claims he assaulted her in 2019 and again in 2024. After making a public denial of these claims, Swalwell saw immediate backlash, prompting significant figures such as Sen. Adam Schiff and influential labor unions to call for his resignation from the race.
“These allegations are absolutely false. They did not happen, they have never happened, and I will fight them with everything that I have,” Swalwell asserted in a social media statement. The political ramifications could be severe as the California Democratic primary swiftly approaches, with mail ballots set to be sent out next month.
Prominent leaders in the Democratic party, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have stressed the need for an investigation into the allegations, signaling that they must be treated with the seriousness they warrant. With Swalwell's credibility now in question, some political observers worry that the party's chances to secure a place in the upcoming elections might be compromised due to the ongoing turmoil surrounding his candidacy.
The accusations surfaced at a critical time for Swalwell, who has positioned himself as a major contender in the race to succeed outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom. In light of these allegations, labor unions like the California Service Employees International Union have suspended their support, while some of Swalwell’s allies expressed profound distress over the claims.
Representative Jimmy Gomez, who previously backed Swalwell, announced he would withdraw support from the campaign, asserting that a full and indisputable accountability process is necessary. To complicate matters, unverified rumors have also begun to circulate, further fueling skepticism about Swalwell's conduct.
Swalwell's political career has already seen its share of challenges, and while he works to navigate the current crisis, the outcome remains uncertain. With a crowded primary season ahead, the implications of these events will be closely monitored, as the Democratic party seeks not to lose ground in a critical election year.
