In brief

Firefighters are racing against time to control a sprawling wildfire on the slopes of Table Mountain National Park, which has moved dangerously closer to Cape Town.

The fight against a wildfire on Table Mountain has escalated as firefighters work tirelessly to control the flames threatening Cape Town. The blaze began several days ago in the Newlands area, where strong winds have exacerbated the situation, pushing the fire closer to the city’s central business district. Edward Bosch, spokesperson for the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, described the fire as "extensive," with ongoing assessments to gauge property damage and risks.Currently, no immediate threat to downtown Cape Town exists, but this could change as conditions fluctuate through the day. Popular hiking trails within the national park have been closed since the fire broke out, covering more than 148 acres. Park managers expressed concern regarding hikers who may be unknowingly entering restricted areas due to safety risks. In a proactive approach, two helicopters have been deployed for water-bombing operations, with a third on standby from Stellenbosch. While no evacuations have been issued, the situation remains dynamic. More than 80 firefighters from various agencies are engaged in firefighting efforts, and the local cable car service has temporarily shut down due to dense smoke. The Western Cape has witnessed a spate of major wildfires in recent years, raising alarm among Cape Town residents living close to the mountain. Ecologists have suggested implementing more controlled burns to mitigate the high risk of uncontrolled wildfires in the future. As efforts continue, Cape Town's community remains vigilant, hoping for favorable conditions to bring the wildfire under control.
