In brief
Japanese company Toto has cautioned users to avoid using toilet paper on their high-tech toilet seats to protect against scratches and discoloration. Instead, it recommends using soft cloths with water or detergent.
Japanese company Toto, renowned for its advanced toilet technology, is urging users to reconsider their cleaning habits after revealing that the use of toilet paper can potentially damage its innovative seats. The bidet toilets, favored for their modern features such as heated seats, music players, and automatic flush systems, face an unusual threat from the very product designed for hygiene. In a recent statement to the Mainichi Shimbun, Toto explained that their bidet toilet seats are constructed from plastic resin, chosen for its durability against detergents and versatility for complex designs. However, it has been reported that wiping the seat with toilet paper could create micro scratches on the surface—flaws that, while invisible to the naked eye, can trap dirt and lead to evident discoloration. The company’s caution follows a wave of social media reports highlighting issues with scratches and staining. They're not alone in this guidance; various cleaning experts and lifestyle blogs have also warned against the use of toilet paper for such purposes. Instead, they advocate for a gentler cleaning method, suggesting that a soft cloth dampened with water or a mild detergent would be a far better choice. Users are also advised to steer clear of any abrasive materials, including thinners, metal scrubbers, or other harsh scrubbers that could compromise the integrity of the toilet seat. While Toto is exploring the development of more scratch-resistant materials, the company announced that there are currently no plans to alter the existing product material. Their flagship product, the Washlet, remains a symbol of Japan’s innovative approach to comfort and cleanliness, continually attracting both domestic and international attention as part of Japan's unique hospitality culture.
