In brief

The onset of 2025 brings a collective blank slate, prompting introspection about the challenges and opportunities ahead. Inspired by Christian Marclay's installation "The Clock," the piece invites readers to meditate on the fluidity of time, narrative construction, and the role we play in defining our experiences.

In the early days of 2025, the calendar stands before us as a canvas ripe with potential. Each person carries their personal expectations, apprehensions, and aspirations about the year. “2025 will be tough for me,” a friend candidly shared, unfolding a list of significant life changes she anticipates: expanding her business and potentially relocating. To her, these felt like daunting tasks, while to me, they seemed exhilarating—an adventure weaving through someone else's tapestry of existence. We all share the same number of days ahead, each day furnishing us with opportunities. This raises poignant questions: How will we engage with each moment? What narratives will we choose to construct from our experiences? The invitation to reflect came from a recent encounter with Christian Marclay's remarkable project, “The Clock,” exhibited at MoMA. This 24-hour film fuses countless movie clips featuring clocks, synchronized with actual time, transforming it into both a cinematic and temporal experience.During a special solstice viewing that stretched overnight, I found myself hurrying, realizing it was 8 p.m. However, I paused, recognizing that my arrival timing was inconsequential; attendees flowed in and out of the screening throughout the event. “The Clock” compelled me to reassess my relationship with time—it flows continuously, indifferent to our presence. Watching the film taught me that whether or not I concentrate on specific plots, time ticks on—a fluid force, an ever-present reality. As I settled into the experience and hours drifted by, my thoughts wandered back to the central question: Can one approach time incorrectly? Am I paying too much attention to the clips’ stories instead of the passage of time itself? Each second captured an essence of cinema history, yet every moment on screen signified something deeper about how we engage with time. “The Clock” challenges us to ponder how we transform the mundane flow of minutes and hours into narratives—woven tales filled with meaning. As 2025 unfolds, we stand at a crossroads, authoring our own stories. The excitement and anxiety mingling in our minds point to one uncertainty: who determines the essence of this upcoming year? Will it be a year of growth and opportunity or strife and setbacks? The answer lies within us and the stories we choose to tell.
