In brief
After an extended hospitalization due to serious health issues, Pope Francis met with healthcare providers to express his gratitude. Though he continues to recuperate, he will not lead Easter services this year, reflecting his frail condition.
Pope Francis met with a group of doctors, nurses, and staff from Policlinico A. Gemelli on Wednesday, thanking them for their care during a critical period of his health. Earlier this year, the pontiff, who is 88, faced significant health challenges, including bronchial infections and pneumonia that nearly took his life.In a voice marked by fatigue, Francis expressed sincere appreciation: “Thank you, thank you for everything you have done. I pray for you, I hope you do the same for me.” Although he has resumed some activities and increased his public engagements, it has been announced that he will not preside over the important Easter services, a decision taken to prioritize his health. Instead, several cardinals have been designated to lead the celebrations in his stead. While it remains uncertain whether he will participate in any Easter activities, the Vatican mentioned he might still deliver a blessing. This meeting marked Francis's first significant public interaction since his discharge from the hospital on March 23, where he had stayed for 38 days due to his serious condition. Post-hospitalization, the pope has been focusing on recovery at the Vatican, partaking in physiotherapy and gradually resuming meetings with Vatican officials. He is also engaging in reviewing texts and documents, as shared by the Vatican press office.
