NewJeans Temporarily Pause Activities Amid Legal Dispute with Ador
South Korean K-pop sensation NewJeans announces a hiatus following a court ruling against their attempts to sever ties with their record label Ador.
South Korean pop group NewJeans has declared a temporary break from all activities in light of a recent court ruling that went against them in their legal feud with record label Ador. This revelation came during their performance at ComplexCon Hong Kong, where they debuted their new song, "Pit Stop."
During the concert, the five-member ensemble, who are in the process of rebranding as NJZ, addressed their supporters, stating, “this will be our last performance for a little while.” The court’s verdict has led to restrictions on their ability to organize live shows, create music, or enter into sponsorship agreements while the dispute with Ador is underway.
The group has been vocal about their desire to terminate their relationship with Ador, citing mistreatment, and have announced plans to challenge the recent ruling. Their concert in Hong Kong was their first public appearance since the legal decision, which has left them unable to freely operate as they wish.
In an emotional speech, members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Heyin took turns reading a letter to their fans, expressing the difficulty of the decision, yet emphasizing the importance of respecting the court’s order. “We believe this is something we need to do at this moment,” they shared. The group highlighted their commitment to returning stronger and the importance of standing up for their dignity and rights.
Despite the ruling, NewJeans performed under their new name NJZ, which they suggested as a show of defiance against the court’s decision. Ador, in a response to their performance, expressed disappointment over the group's choice of name and restricted actions, asserting their commitment to supporting NewJeans as per their existing contract.
The ongoing dispute has been simmering since August 2024, with NewJeans airing public grievances against Ador, including allegations of workplace harassment and claims that the label has undermined their careers. The court ruled that NewJeans had not sufficiently demonstrated that Ador failed its contractual obligations, asserting that the label largely fulfilled its duties, including payments.
With their bright sound blending nostalgic R&B and pop, NewJeans has become a leading figure in the K-pop scene, ranking among the top-selling artists globally in 2023. Their recognition includes a nomination for the best group at the MTV Awards last year, marking them as one of the most promising talents in the music industry. As they navigate this challenging period, fans are left hoping for a resolution that allows the group to return to the stage and continue their careers.
