Russian Missile Strike on Ukrainian Training Site Results in Casualties
Recent missile attacks by Russia on Ukrainian military training units have led to fatalities and injuries among servicemen.
A missile strike by Russia has reportedly hit a Ukrainian military training unit, leading to confirmed casualties among Ukrainian troops. According to statements from the Ukrainian armed forces made late on Tuesday, the strike resulted in three fatalities and 18 additional injuries. While the exact location of the training ground has not been disclosed by the military, journalist Andrei Taplienko noted that it is situated in the Chernihiv region, adjacent to both Russia and Belarus.
Russia's Ministry of Defence released video footage asserting the use of an Iskander ballistic missile, which they claimed resulted in over 20 explosions in a wooded area. The authenticity of the video is still under scrutiny, as the Russian MOD suggested that Ukrainian casualties were significantly underestimated. Following the attack, Ukraine’s ground forces expressed regret over the loss of personnel despite implemented security measures.
This incident marks the third missile strike on a Ukrainian training site within a span of just over two months. Previous attacks included one in May that claimed the lives of six servicemen in the Sumy region, and another strike last month that resulted in the deaths of 12 personnel and injuries to around 60.
The recent strike has prompted the Ukrainian military to promise an investigation into whether the actions—or lack thereof—by officials may have contributed to these losses. Notably, the commander of Ukrainian ground forces, Mykhailo Drapatyi, resigned following the previous month's attack, which left a significant number of young trainees vulnerable. The ongoing threat to Ukrainian troops during training exercises underscores the challenges faced by the military in safeguarding personnel amid persistent conflict.
