Dublin to Enhance Protection for Iconic Molly Malone Statue
The city will deploy stewards to safeguard the famed statue while remedying damage caused by frequent tourist interactions.
In a move to preserve the integrity of the Molly Malone statue, a cherished symbol of Dublin, the city is set to take action amidst concerns over damage caused by tourists. The life-size bronze statue, representing the iconic character from the well-known folk song “Molly Malone,” has suffered discoloration due to visitors frequently touching its breasts, believing this act brings them luck.
To combat this issue, Dublin City Council announced their decision to provide stewards who will monitor the statue in May, aiming to both protect the work of art and enhance visitor education regarding its cultural importance. The council's response is partly motivated by an advocacy campaign named "Leave Molly Malone Alone," spearheaded by Tilly Cripwell, a dedicated student and busker at Trinity College Dublin.
The installations of stewards will not be the end of the council’s initiatives as they also plan to address the statue's damage with necessary repairs, a process they have undertaken multiple times over the years. The statue, which stands on Suffolk Street and has become a focal point during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, symbolizes the working-class spirit of the city.
As Dublin takes this unique step to ensure respect for its cultural heritage, city officials hope to foster a more mindful approach among tourists while protecting their artistic landmarks for generations to come.
