Avalanche Strikes Uttarakhand: Four Confirmed Dead, Search for Missing Continues
Tragic avalanche in Uttarakhand leaves four dead and several unaccounted for as rescue operations are underway.
Rescue teams are actively engaged in recovery operations after the avalanche hit the village of Mana in northern India near the Tibetan border on Friday. The incident primarily affected laborers working at a Border Roads Organisation camp, and while around 50 individuals buried in the snow were saved, four succumbed to their injuries. Helicopters have been dispatched to aid in searching for five remaining missing persons.
Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that rescue efforts are ongoing, emphasizing the government's commitment to supporting those impacted during this emergency. Footage shared by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police captured scenes of rescuers navigating through heavy snow, carrying injured individuals on stretchers.
Local resident Gaurav Kunwar explained that the avalanche struck in a region primarily inhabited by seasonal laborers, as it is not a permanent settlement zone. Workers were present at the camp due to recent heavy rainfall and inclement weather that have been affecting the Himalayan region. The India Meteorological Department has since cautioned about further heavy precipitation and issued orange alerts for snowfall in neighboring areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
