With over 160 residents still unaccounted for, scrutiny of local officials has intensified following an alarming sequence of events on July 4.
During a press conference on Thursday, Kerrville Police community services officer Jonathan Lamb was confronted about possible lapses in police radio communication, stating, "I don't have any information to that point." This query came after an intense exchange where reporters pressed officials about the delay in emergency notifications leading up to the floods.
The Guadalupe River surged dramatically, inundating Kerrville and its surroundings with approximately 100 billion gallons of rain. Reports indicate that a firefighter who noticed the rising waters reached out to the Kerr County Sheriff's Office around 4:22 AM, urging them to alert residents. However, it wasn’t until nearly six hours later that a CodeRED notification was sent out, exposing a significant delay that left many populations unaware of the impending danger.
Kerr County officials have faced questions regarding their response time, as reports have emerged detailing that no alerts were issued until well after many residents had already become trapped in floodwaters. As a consequence of this communication breakdown, numerous families have been left devastated, including the tragic loss of 36 children who were attending a local Christian camp.
Whilst weather alerts for potential flooding had been issued prior to the storm, emergency response teams cited challenges such as poor cell service and public desensitization to alerts in flood-prone areas that might have led residents to underestimate the situation.
In an effort to address the emergency, Texas Governor Greg Abbott requested federal assistance, resulting in a disaster declaration by President Donald Trump.
