### Tragedy Strikes: Floods Devastate Lives in Nigeria's Mokwa Town

**A heartbreaking account of loss and survival as floods wreak havoc in North-Central Nigeria, claiming lives and homes.**

**Mokwa Town has transformed into a scene of despair following devastating floods that have led to significant loss of life and property. Residents grapple with trauma, grief and uncertainty.**

The recent flooding in Mokwa Town, Niger State, Nigeria, left many residents grappling with tragic losses as entire families were swept away. Adamu Yusuf, a 36-year-old father, recounted the harrowing moment when he lost nine family members, including his wife and newborn baby, during this unprecedented disaster.

In the early hours of Thursday, as the floodwaters burst into his home, his wife woke him, urging him to gather the family. However, chaos erupted as the flood quickly overran their living spaces, and in the turmoil, they got separated. "I watched helplessly as water washed away my family," said Yusuf, whose survival was attributed to his ability to swim.

With local officials reporting a rising death toll now surpassing 200, the extent of the devastation in Tiffin Maza and surrounding communities is alarming. Only days ago, the number of casualties was reported at 110, suggesting an ongoing search for bodies trapped beneath debris.

As residents surveyed the destruction left behind, shattered homes, and personal belongings strewn across the landscape, grief hung heavily in the air. "I lost everything to this flood. But the most painful is that of my family," Yusuf lamented. Many are left reflecting on loved ones, with 19-year-old Isa Muhammed mourning the disappearance of his teacher and several family members, as the community rallies together amid overwhelming sorrow.

The floodwaters have now receded, but the stench in Tiffin Maza signifies more grim discoveries, with residents fearing that unaccounted bodies lie buried under the mud. Many families, like that of Ramat Sulaiman, now find themselves homeless, destitute, and haunted by what they witnessed.

Saliu Sulaiman, a resident, expressed shock at losing substantial financial investments in the disaster, doing everything he could to save his family while leaving behind valuable goods. The long-term impact of these floods raises concerns about food security, as the region grapples with socioeconomic challenges compounded by recent climate events.

While meteorological forecasts indicate a lengthy rainy season ahead for Nigeria, local leaders investigate root causes of the flood beyond heavy rainfall. Many residents are suspicious about the unusual flooding patterns, pointing to a potential failure of local reservoirs that they feel is exacerbating risks in their communities.

As the rehabilitation process begins, the National Emergency Management Agency is providing assistance to those displaced while searching for answers behind the trigger of this disaster.

The human toll in Mokwa is incalculable, with families like that of Mr. Yusuf facing an uphill battle to rebuild their lives amidst enduring trauma and uncertainty in a region historically vulnerable to flooding.
