US to Examine 55 Million Visas for Compliance with Immigration Rules

A sweeping review of US visa holders begins as the government implements rigorous vetting measures to ensure compliance with immigration standards.

As part of a proactive immigration strategy, the US government is scrutinizing the records of over 55 million visa holders to identify violations, with major consequences for those found in breach of conditions.

The US government has initiated a comprehensive review of more than 55 million visa holders to ensure compliance with immigration regulations. According to a state department spokesperson, this endeavor involves a process of "continuous vetting," aiming to revoke visas if holders are found to have committed "overstays, criminal activities, or engaged in any terrorist-related activities."

The push to intensify immigration oversight can be traced back to President Donald Trump’s administration, which has made immigration reform a central theme of its policies. Measures under this initiative include mass deportations, strict travel bans targeting specific countries, and the cancellation of over 6,000 student visas.

In this sweeping overhaul, future visa applicants—including students and visitors—will also undergo stringent social media checks aimed at flagging any expressions of hostility towards American values and principles. Matthew Tragesser from US Citizenship and Immigration Services emphasized that the agency remains committed to policies designed to eliminate anti-American sentiments among visa holders.

Adding to the immigration scrutiny, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a temporary pause on worker visas for foreign truck drivers, citing safety concerns for American lives and the economic impact on local truckers as reasons for the decision.

The recent developments follow a series of arrests of foreign students at US universities who protested the US-supported actions of Israel in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, new requirements have been imposed on citizens from Malawi and Zambia, mandating a hefty $15,000 deposit for tourist or business visas.

Throughout Trump’s presidency, the administration has implemented extensive travel restrictions on nationals from 12 countries and has enacted policies to revoke the legal status of more than half a million migrants currently residing in the US. Further, Trump has indicated intentions to eliminate birthright citizenship, signaling a more aggressive stance on immigration reform.
