South African MP Escapes Hijacking Attempt by Firing Back at Assailants
Ian Cameron's quick reaction during a violent ambush highlights the escalating crime crisis in South Africa.
In a harrowing episode of violence, South African MP Ian Cameron, a member of the police committee, defended himself and his colleagues from a gang ambush in Cape Town’s township of Philippi. While returning from a work-related visit, Cameron and his fellow parliamentarians Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell were violently attacked by assailants who smashed the car windows with bricks, resulting in injuries to both Cameron and Gotsell.
With their safety hanging in the balance, Cameron, who suffered a broken lip and shattered teeth, reacted swiftly by firing his weapon, hitting one of the attackers. Two suspects, aged 16 and 18, were subsequently arrested—one while seeking medical aid at a hospital and another on a farm shortly after. Authorities continue to search for a third assailant in connection with the crime.
Cameron described the terrifying moment when the first brick came crashing through the car window, striking him in the face. Realizing their dire situation, he knew immediate action was necessary. "I realised that if we don't do something, then this can go really bad," he recounted. The trio quickly fled to the nearest secure area after the gunfire.
Currently, South Africa struggles with a significant crime rate, including one of the highest murder rates globally. The Democratic Alliance (DA), to which Cameron belongs, has continually criticized the deteriorating safety conditions in the country. Gotsell, after being treated for his injuries, praised Cameron's daring response, recognizing the bravery it took to protect themselves under such perilous circumstances.
