In his first formal address to Roman Catholic cardinals, Pope Leo XIV emphasized a commitment to continue Pope Francis’ mission of fostering a more inclusive Church with a focus on marginalized communities. Speaking on Saturday, the new pope referenced a key document from 2013—Evangelii Gaudium—where Francis highlighted principles such as “growth in collegiality” and “loving care for the least and the rejected.”
During his address, Leo explained the significance of his name, drawing on the legacy of Pope Leo XIII, who in the late 19th century tackled social justice issues amidst the industrial revolution. He noted that the current technological revolution, particularly in artificial intelligence, presents “new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor.” The Church, he asserted, possesses a rich treasury of social teaching to address these issues.
Expressing admiration for his predecessor, Leo acknowledged Francis as a “humble servant of God,” reiterating the need for the Church to remain steadfast in its principles. Cardinal Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo of Venezuela and Cardinal Sean Brady of Ireland, after the meeting, highlighted the importance of Leo’s commitment to the continuity of Francis' papacy, particularly in areas concerning the formation of clergy and the ongoing dialogue between faith and contemporary societal challenges.
