Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that the Israeli military "eliminated" Mohammed Sinwar, the top Hamas commander in Gaza. Sinwar, who was among the most wanted figures in the conflict, is the brother of the group's former leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed last year. This announcement comes amidst a protracted military campaign that began 600 days ago in retaliation for a cross-border attack by Hamas which resulted in significant casualties on both sides.

On May 13, Israeli forces targeted a Hamas underground facility located near the European Hospital in Khan Younis, claiming the strike destroyed key parts of Hamas’s infrastructure. Reports from Gaza's health ministry indicated that this strike resulted in 28 fatalities, though Hamas has not officially confirmed the death of Sinwar.

Since the military operations commenced, the conflict has escalated, with over 54,084 casualties reported in Gaza, underscoring the devastating impact of the ongoing violence. As tensions remain high, it is yet to be seen how this latest development will influence the already volatile situation in the region.
