Investigators have made a crucial breakthrough in their inquiry into the recent Air India flight crash by recovering the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which is essential to understanding the circumstances leading to the disaster. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, bound for London, tragically crashed just moments after departing from Ahmedabad, killing at least 270 individuals on board.
The CVR documents audio from the cockpit, including conversations among pilots, warning alarms, and environmental sounds, while the flight data recorder (FDR) maintains critical flight metrics like speed and altitude. Both devices, commonly referred to as the ‘black box,’ are vital in establishing a timeline of events prior to the crash. Notably, these black boxes, distinguished by their bright orange exterior designed for visibility, are built to withstand impact.
India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is spearheading the investigation with support from American and British teams, as well as representatives from Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A high-level committee appointed by the Indian government aimed at diagnosing the reasons for the calamity is set to conduct its initial meeting soon and is expected to provide a preliminary report alongside recommendations for future safety measures.
As deliberations proceed, the emotional toll on grieving families is palpable. Many are anxiously waiting for the remains of their loved ones to be identified, amidst the slow and difficult process of matching DNA due to the severity of the crash. Medical personnel reported that 270 bodies were recovered, with progress in identifying more than 90 victims.
Among those confirmed is Vijay Rupani, Gujarat’s former chief minister, who will be honored with a full state burial. Meanwhile, distressed family members endure the excruciating wait for forensic confirmations, expressing concern and frustration as the search and identification processes extend further.
