UK Government's Secret Resettlement Program for Afghans Disclosed
A significant data breach revealed personal information of Afghan allies, leading to a covert resettlement effort for those at risk.
In a startling revelation, the UK government has admitted to a clandestine resettlement initiative for Afghans who aided British forces, following a major data breach that occurred in 2022. This oversight, affecting personal details of over 18,000 Afghans, was initially kept under wraps due to a “super injunction” secured by the former government led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, which had prohibited reporting on the incident.
On July 15, 2025, Defense Secretary John Healey acknowledged that the breach originated from an email dispatched outside official channels. Unfortunately, the full extent of the breach wasn't acknowledged until August 2023 when details concerning nine individuals surfaced on social media. In response, the Conservative government launched the Afghan Response Route—a covert resettlement program that has successfully brought around 4,500 individuals and their families to the UK, incurring expenses of approximately $537 million.
Healey declared the termination of the Afghan relocation efforts and announced the upcoming publication of a report addressing the issue. This report reportedly suggested a lack of substantial evidence indicating a Taliban campaign against the exposed individuals, suggesting no immediate threat had arisen from the data exposure incident.
The situation has reignited discussions about data security, governmental transparency, and the protection of vulnerable populations in foreign nations, with advocates stressing the need for accountability in handling sensitive information.
