French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly condemned the recent destruction of a memorial tree planted to honor Ilan Halimi, a Jewish man who was brutally murdered in 2006. The olive tree, which had stood for 14 years in Épinay-sur-Seine, was cut down on a Wednesday, prompting Macron to describe the act as "an attempt to kill him a second time." He emphasized that "all means are being deployed to punish this act of hatred," expressing a commitment to ensuring justice.

Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez announced that an investigation is underway and stressed that every effort will be made to locate and prosecute those responsible for this heinous act. Halimi's tragic story, marked by being tortured and murdered by a gang for over three weeks, continues to resonate across France due to its antisemitic motivations.

His captors sought a ransom from his family, solely targeting Halimi based on his Jewish identity, leading to public outrage at the time. The local government reported that the memorial tree had been found severed at its base and unceremoniously discarded into a nearby flowerbed, a reminder of the ongoing battle against antisemitism in France.

Macron reiterated that France will "not forget this child of France who died because he was Jewish." He reinforced the nation's steadfast resolve against antisemitism, backed by Prime Minister François Bayrou's declaration that "no crime can uproot memory."
