Teenager with Shotgun Overpowered by Passengers on Jetstar Flight

Passengers display incredible bravery as a 17-year-old armed with a shotgun is subdued before takeoff from Avalon Airport, Melbourne.

In a shocking incident during a Jetstar flight, a 17-year-old managed to breach airport security with a shotgun, only to be restrained by heroic passengers before the aircraft departed.

Passengers and crew members on a Jetstar flight from Avalon Airport, near Melbourne, faced a terrifying ordeal when a 17-year-old armed with a shotgun boarded the plane. The incident, which occurred Thursday afternoon, involved approximately 160 passengers just before the flight was set to depart for Sydney.

According to authorities, the teenager infiltrated the airport tarmac by breaking through a security fence. Footage from 7News shows the tense moments as passengers restrained the suspect while crew members removed a utility belt he was carrying. As the confrontation unfolded, the pilot was also seen kicking the shotgun away from the youth, who was later revealed to be wearing a fluorescent jacket similar to that of airport workers.

Superintendent Michael Reid from the Victoria Police reported that several passengers noticed the teenager carrying the firearm as he climbed aboard. "At least three passengers overpowered the male," he stated. Reid emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and while counterterrorism police are involved, the motive behind the attack remains unclear. He acknowledged the fear instilled in passengers during the harrowing event.

One passenger, Barry Clark, recounted his experience, expressing how he seized the opportunity to disarm the teen. "All I could do was get the gun out of the way... and then put him in a hold and throw him to the ground until the police came," he recalled, highlighting the quick-thinking actions that prevented a potential tragedy.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and investigations subsequently led police to find the suspect's vehicle and personal belongings in close proximity to Avalon Airport. In response to the incident, Jetstar issued a statement expressing gratitude towards the passengers who courageously assisted the crew. The airport has since reopened, with its CEO, Ari Suss, affirming the resumption of normal operations.

As law enforcement continues their investigations, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of airport security and the critical role ordinary citizens can play in safeguarding public safety.
