Eurostar Services Disrupted by Tragedy and Cable Theft
Travelers face significant delays on Eurostar trains due to tragic incidents and theft affecting the high-speed rail system.
Eurostar passengers are grappling with severe delays and cancellations as they contend with a second day of disruptions affecting routes between London, Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The troubles began when two individuals died in separate accidents on the LGV Nord high-speed line between Lille and Paris, resulting in the closure of the line on Tuesday.
The situation worsened on Wednesday when approximately 600 meters of copper cables were reported stolen near Lille, which has compounded the delays further. This theft has led to trains being rerouted, causing extended journey times that have left many travelers frustrated.
Eurostar has advised passengers to consider postponing their trips and informed them of significant delays, along with a number of last-minute cancellations. Passengers can modify their travel arrangements at no additional cost or request a full refund, as stated in Eurostar’s official communication.
"We're very sorry for the impact this is having on our customers," a Eurostar spokesperson conveyed, highlighting that their teams are collaborating closely with French authorities and infrastructure teams to resolve the situation and restore safe train services.
As some repairs have been implemented, one track has opened, allowing limited train operations in both directions, though full repairs are not anticipated until around 16:00 BST. In the meantime, passengers aboard delayed trains have been receiving water and services at stations are reported to be bustling with travelers.
