Bill Gates Commits to Donate 99% of Wealth by 2045: A Philanthropic Revolution

Bill Gates has announced his intention to give away 99% of his wealth over the next two decades through his foundation, accelerating his charitable efforts to address health and poverty issues worldwide.

In a bold new pledge, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has stated his ambition to donate 99% of his fortune by the year 2045, significantly accelerating his philanthropic efforts. In a blog shared recently, Gates expressed his desire to ensure that when he passes, the narrative won’t be that he “died rich.”

Having already contributed around $100 billion towards health and development initiatives through his foundation, Gates anticipates disbursing an additional $200 billion over the next two decades, contingent upon economic conditions. Echoing sentiments from Andrew Carnegie's 1889 essay, "The Gospel of Wealth," Gates recalls Carnegie’s assertion that wealthy individuals have a societal obligation to share their fortunes.

This latest move reflects a notable shift in Gates' approach to philanthropy, moving faster than previously planned. Initially, he and his ex-wife, Melinda, intended for the Gates Foundation to operate for several decades beyond their lifetimes. However, his recent updates show a hand-drawn depiction of his wealth trajectory, which points towards a goal of reaching near zero by 2045.

Gates, who remains one of the world's wealthiest individuals with a current net worth estimated at $108 billion, acknowledges that this extraordinary donation could still leave him a billionaire. His foundation draws from a substantial endowment to support its goal of giving away $200 billion.

Gates cites inspiration from other prominent philanthropists, including Warren Buffett, yet faces criticism suggesting that he leverages his foundation’s charitable status to sidestep taxes, amid concerns over its influence on global health policies.

In his blog, Gates outlined three priority areas for the foundation: eradicating preventable maternal and child mortality, fighting infectious diseases such as malaria and measles, and alleviating poverty affecting millions.

Additionally, Gates voiced discontent towards recent cuts in foreign aid budgets by the US, UK, and France, questioning their commitment to assisting impoverished communities. He further criticized Elon Musk’s actions, linking them to detrimental impacts on global health, especially citing children infected with HIV due to budget cuts.
