Sections of a major highway in Queensland, Australia, have partially collapsed as catastrophic flooding worsens, leading to evacuations and tragic loss of life. The relentless torrential rainfall has already claimed one life and resulted in the displacement of thousands from their homes, particularly affecting communities in Townsville, Ingham, and Cardwell. Authorities predict that "record" rainfall will continue, with some areas experiencing over 1.3 meters (4.2 feet) of rain in just a few days.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his support for the communities affected, highlighting the resilience of the citizens during these trying times. He shared on social media a depiction of Australians coming together to support one another in the face of adversity, but cautioned that the flooding threat would continue for several days.

The conditions have complicated rescue efforts, especially due to damage on the Bruce Highway, a significant transport route connecting Brisbane to distant regional centers, which has been severely impaired by flooding. The Queensland Trucking Association reported that the recent damage to infrastructure, including the collapse of a critical bridge, could extend travel times by an additional 700 kilometers (434 miles), disrupting the delivery of essential supplies.

Ingham has particularly suffered, as noted by Queensland Premier David Crisafulli, who expressed his condolences following the tragic drowning of a 63-year-old woman during a rescue mission. He also recommended that residents in flooded areas, referred to as the "black-zone," avoid returning to their homes due to the lurking danger from the swollen Ross River.

According to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, the region has received an unprecedented six months' worth of rain in just three days, with water levels expected to inundate approximately 2,000 residences, possibly reaching the second floor in some locations. Major flood warnings remain active for several rivers, including the Herbert, Ross, and Bohle. Emergency personnel are tirelessly working, responding to about 480 distress calls overnight, while maintaining focus on public safety in affected neighborhoods.

Despite the area’s historical susceptibility to cyclones, experts warn that climate change is exacerbating the impact of extreme weather events, resulting in more frequent and intense rainfall. Meteorologists suggest that the current flooding crisis could be among the worst the region has seen in over six decades, drawing attention to the pressing need for sustainable solutions in the face of climate change challenges.
